The CGI trailer for Dead Island isn't exactly light and easy to watch for everyone. I can see that. What really amazes me is the number of hypocrites claiming that they "love the zombie genre" or are "avid fans" yet consider the depiction of zombification of a little girl irresponsible, reprehensible, cynical and all those words which are usually associated with high horses.
Let's think about this again: what does it mean when someone is a fan of the "zombie genre"? With some exceptions, said genre usually involves graphic depictions of exploitation, mutilation and slaughter of zombies (that is men and women afflicted by a horrible plague or magic and deprived even of the final resting peace). Dear sir, if that is not "disturbing" for you, as opposed to the same thing happening to a young girl, then you're one fucked up individual. For the record let's state that what happens to the girl in the infamous DI trailer is more an accident as a result of the horror and confusion of the outbreak than a gleeful slaughter of formerly human beings the zombie genre is famous for.
Getting back to the issue of disturbing content: it's everywhere, it's a device used in storytelling and YES, many visions are created to evoke strong emotions. When the enforcers are executing dogs in Equilibrium I wince with every shot, despite the fact that it's just sound coming from off the screen. The Omaha Beach scene in Saving Private Ryan isn't exactly a cartoon either. Those are just two examples for mainstream movies which would normally never come up in a discussion about controversial or disturbing scenes. There are movies and games which show children getting hurt, killed or transformed into bloodthirsty monsters. Those scenes shouldn't be used lightly but they can be just as artistically justified as all other displays of violence and suffering.
What is the legal age for creating zombies? 15? 17? What exactly makes the difference between "you are monsters for showing this in a fictional CGI trailer!!" and "oh shit! look how cool it is when you chop off their limbs!!"?
Last but not least let us remember that the content of a CGI trailer does not equal the content of the game.
